At Planet Woman, a 24-hour gym in Kamloops, we understand how hard it can be to stay committed to a fitness plan. Having specific fitness goals can help, and so can utilizing the service of a personal trainer. Here are five fitness goal-setting tips to help you stay on track.


Break Down Your Goals

While staying fit for a lifetime is an honourable goal, it is also so far-reaching that it is often daunting. Instead, break down your goals into short-term and long-term. Give yourself the opportunity for frequent pats on the back, so you don’t get discouraged. Is your goal weight loss? If so, don’t get hung up on losing mass amounts of weight right away. Set your goals in five-pound increments and be proud of every pound lost. Even if your end goal is 50-pounds, don’t get too hung up on the numbers. Slow and steady wins the race.

Get a Notebook To Track Your Goals/Progress

Whether you use an app or an old-school pen and paper, it’s important to track your progress, both so you can stay on track and so you can see improvements. Bench pressing 50-pounds may not seem like a lot if your goal is 150, but if you can look back at your notes and see that you started by struggling to lift the 22-pound bar only a short time ago, you will feel encouraged by the gains you’ve made rather than feeling discouraged by how far you have to go.

Make Sure Your Goals Are Relevant/Achievable

If you’re excited and determined to lead a more active lifestyle, give yourself as many achievable opportunities for success as possible. Don’t worry if you’re not hitting the gym seven days per week, but make it a goal to move your body every day – whether that’s in five-minute increments or all at once isn’t as important as actually getting it done. Get a fitness tracker and aim for 10,000 steps per day. Build from there.

Don’t Compare Yourself To Others

This is your journey and no one else’s. Having an accountability partner or friend to share your journey with is helpful and fun and there is nothing wrong with setting challenges or friendly competitions, but at the end of the day everyone progresses at their own rate.
